The Devil's Angels MCThe Devil’s Angels MC by Lola Wright
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ava Beaumont has a past that she keeps safely guarded and to herself. When her crazy neighbor makes waves and calls the cops on her because of her dog Loki, she ends up receiving help from Gunner, the President of the Devil’s Angels MC. Gunner is a one and done type of man, he has enough responsibility with his club to form any attachment to a woman let alone get himself an Ol lady but one look at Ava he knows he wants her.

Ava isn’t sure she can trust Gunner but he claims he wants to try a relationship with her. Will the biker who is set in his ways be able to be trusted? Ava quickly finds herself becoming part of the MC life but a threat is out there she thought was in her past and Gunner is determined to keep her safe. Will he be able to?

Wonderful read. This author was recently recommended to me and she did not disappoint. Loved Ava, she is a terrific heroine who has risen when she could have easily failed. Gunner is pure alpha male and the others in the club are fascinating. Loved the animals in this story, they bring a lot of humor to it. Excellent read.

I have found that writing is great therapy for my own personal fight against MS. Being a Louisiana native I wanted to write books about places in Louisiana that would piqué interest in my beautiful and unique state. My books take place in my home state and draw the reader in with the diverse culture, characters, and locations. It is my hope that my readers not only enjoy the books I have written, but also develop a desire to experience the unique culture that only Louisiana has to offer!

Sarge walks into the kitchen and looks between the coffee all over the fridge door, the smashed porcelain on the ground and me, chuckling.

“That went well,” he says and lets his own laughter rip from his lips. “Heard her shrieking like a banshee out in the yard.”

“She wants to go home.” I rub my hands over my eyes and try to relax, but knowing she’s pissed isn’t great for me.”

“Women are different,” Sarge says with a shrug.

“Tell me about it.”

“Sometimes it’s best to shut the fuck up and not fight ‘em.” Sarge sits in the chair that Nix was sitting in.

“You pussy-whipped?” I ask as I feel my eyebrows draw together in question.

“Hmmm.” He reverts back to normal Sarge. “Women wanna be told what to do, but you need to make it look like it’s their idea.”

“That’s fucked. She should just do what I say and be happy with it.”

Sarge shakes his head. “She’s right, you’re a dick.”

5 Stars

Jaeger Dalton is ready to call on a debt, as President of Hunters MC Club he knows how to handle a problem swiftly. He plans to take Freedom Run from the man who has defaulted, even if it means dealing with his son. Of course it is not often that Jaeger is caught off guard until he meets Phoenix Ward.

Jaeger is filthy, demanding, and calls to every seductive bone in your body. Phoenix is temperamental, head strong, and not going take any flack from Jaeger. Together they are combustible and quickly rise in favorite hero/heroine combo.

Loved this one, gritty, dirty, and perfectly written. Not for the faint of heart but if you are ready to take a thrill ride and delve into Grit, you will not be disappointed. New to me author and so excited to be willing to read more from this talented author.

I’ve found that the more I write, the more I like being different to other authors. I write in first person, and I love to challenge a reader.
I take the normal and switch it around.
For me, I really enjoy getting a reaction from a reader. So if I can evoke an emotion (regardless of if it’s the emotion the reader wants) then I figure that I’ve done my job as an author I want to be.
I really quite revel in taking people out of their comfort zones and pushing them to read something different.
My genre of writing is, well quite frankly, where ever my mind goes. I won’t label myself because I don’t like sticking to one genre.
My goal with writing is just to take people away from whatever is going on in their lives, even if it’s only for a split second.
I’m a go with the flow sort of person and don’t really take a course of action to get where I am going. I live in the moment and don’t usually worry about tomorrow because whatever life is due to bring me, I’ll be happy to accept.
I love my family and friends and will help anyway I can if someone needs it. I really don’t like people that are nasty just because they can be, I don’t believe that’s necessary, I mean life’s hard enough as it is!
I hope you enjoy my books, I’ve had a hoot writing them. There’s more to come…..
Til next time.

by Ellen Butler

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Sophie Hartland has recently turned 30, and is five years out from a confidence crushing divorce. She’s sworn off men in favor of making her interior design business a success when her best friend introduces her to LA Heat’s hot, new star, Ian O’Connor. He’s one of Hollywood’s beautiful people, with an Irish accent that makes Sophie’s toes curl. Ian hires her to renovate his home, and at their second meeting he initiates a scorching kiss that knocks her socks off. Even though she would love to drop down and go for it on the funky kitchen floor, Sophie sticks to her guns and enforces her “no dating clients” rule.
The tabloids portray flirtations Ian as Hollywood’s latest playboy who has women falling at his feet, and Sophie refuses to be another notch on his bedpost. But Ian isn’t the type to take no for an answer, and he finds Sophie a refreshing change from the actress wannabes trying hop aboard his new gravy train of success. Using his charm, he tries to persuade Sophie to break the rules.
Can Sophie ignore her traitorous libido and hold Ian off for the next five or six weeks until the renovations are finished? Or will she cave in to his pull on her heartstrings, and end up doing the knicky-knacky on the new velvet sofa? More importantly, can she protect her heart in this game of wills?
Excerpt :
The chandelier was large and unwieldy, at minimum a two-man job. Thirty minutes later, I deeply regretted my choice of lighting. Nothing was going right with the beautiful chrome and glass monstrosity, and Ricky was on his third trip out to his van to look for a harness that would be strong enough to properly hold the heavy piece. I think he was punishing me for purchasing this beast by taking a smoke break while I stood atop one ladder balancing the chandelier on the other. My arms ached from holding it up for such a long time, and my back protested at the awkward way I had to lean forward to balance it.
Finally, the door opened and closed.
“It’s about time. This chandelier is killing me. Remind me never to order this piece again.”
“I’ll try to remember that,” Ian’s dry voice replied.
My head whipped around to look over my shoulder. The ladder wobbled and I leaned farther forward to compensate. Ian put his hand up to help steady me. Unfortunately, with my rear sticking out, basically the best handhold he could get was on that appendage. I cringed in mortification. Just when I’d resolved to be calm and collected the next time I saw him, he arrived when I was doing an impression of a demented cat in heat. As soon as Ian felt I was secure, he removed his hand, and to my horror, climbed the opposite ladder.
“This is perfect. I have you in a position where you can’t run away.” He shifted the chandelier slightly to relieve the load.
I ducked my head into my left bicep and moaned. “Why is it I’m perpetually thrown off balance around you? Literally and figuratively. It seems I can never get my feet under me when you’re around, and I constantly look like an idiot.”
“I don’t know. Yesterday you hopped through the mess in the front hall with the agility of a gazelle being chased by a cheetah. Whereas, I wiped out on a pillow. Looking at it objectively, you fell into my pool as graceful as a ballet dancer.”
“Good to know.” My voice dripped sarcasm.
“Now about Kate—”
“Ian, you don’t owe me any explanations. We have no commitment to each other. You’re free to date whom you want. In the future, I’ll make sure the crew and I ring the bell before entering. I should have done so yesterday. It won’t happen again.”
He watched me with a raised eyebrow and a smirk. “Are you finished?”
“Yes.”
“Good, because I’d like you to meet Kate, my stepsister,” he enunciated, “and if you don’t have any plans tonight, please join us for dinner.”
My mind went blank as soon as I heard the word stepsister. “Huh?” was my brilliant response.
His smirk turned into a wide grin. “Kate, my father’s stepdaughter from New York, is in town for a couple of days. She’d like to meet you.”
“Why does she want to meet me?” My brilliance continued.
“Perhaps because I’ve mentioned you.”
“Me?”
“Yes, you.”
“Why would you do that?”
“Because, besides my co-star Carmen, you’re the sole woman in my life right now.”
“I am?”
Ian gave me an arched look.
“So, Kate was the voice I heard yesterday?”
“Yes.”
My face split into a wide smile. “You’re not sleeping with some floozy.”
“No. And for the record, I don’t sleep with floozies.”
“Good to know.”
“So, you’ll come?”
“What? Come where?”
He snapped a finger in my face. “Focus, Soph. Come to dinner with Kate and me tonight.”
“Are you sure you want me to come?”
“I wouldn’t have asked if I didn’t.”
“You should say yes. I’m making him take me to Nobu,” a female voice said behind me.
Glancing over my shoulder, I spotted Ricky holding a long metal rod. He stood next to a willowy young woman with stick-straight, wheat-colored hair, dressed in a designer deep purple jumpsuit and sporting a cheeky grin.
“Sophie, this is my sister, Kate Dekker. Kate, meet Sophie Hartland.”
“Um, hello.” I nodded awkwardly at her from my perch.
“Hello.”
“Are you two finished up there?” Ricky asked.
“I believe so.”
“Not yet. She hasn’t answered my question,” Ian said.
“Are you planning to hold me hostage up here until I answer?” My eyes returned to his.
“Yes.” His gaze tugged at my belly and left me speechless.
A subtle cough pulled me out of my libido-induced zone-out. “Okay then.”
“Glad that’s all worked out.” Ricky’s voice dripped sarcasm.
Review
When Sophie Hartland meets hot new television star Ian O’Connor,she has no clue as to who he is. Ian made a random comment about the decorating of his hostesses house, he did not expect to meet Sophie and everything about her has caught him off guard. Ian is not necessarily the player the tabloids have made him out to be, but Sophie is incredibly gun shy after divorcing her husband five years ago and has a strict policy about not dating her clients. Waiting until she is done, Ian doesn’t hesitate to let Sophie know he is serious, but he takes her policy to heart and goes about proving he is worth taking a chance on.
Pure fun, fun, fun. It is filled with quirky characters like Sophie’s best friend Poppy and her mother whose ring tone is a parrot. I thought this was entertaining and loved that Ian is bewildered by Sophie. Laugh out loud moments and an a perfect read for the end of summer.
A year later Mitch is a wanted man and he needs help, he reaches out to Caroline who is not interested in ever interacting with him again. Excerpt from Cheating Justice
“I always said you had the best ass in the FBI.”
Her body froze. Eleven months, five days and—she did the math—twelve hours had passed since she’d heard that voice. The one she’d thought about time and again after his last brief visit to her apartment, and she still managed to be equal parts pissed off, concerned and flat-out heartbroken. That voice could only belong to one person. Thus the remark about her ass and—wow—she always knew he had a set of stones, but this was too much even for Mitch Monroe. The man she’d spent all these months trying to forget. Months of burying herself in cases, months of begging her boss for every available opportunity to keep her mind occupied, months of a busy life that didn’t allow for downtime.
Or thoughts of Mitch.
Without turning, she picked up her weapon. “Well, look what the cat dragged in. A girl puts her career on the line for you and you don’t call, you don’t write, nothing. To say the least, your technique needs work.”
And then he laughed. She’d waited months to hit him with that line and he laughed. Classic Mitch. She closed her eyes and—forget that he was a federal fugitive now wanted for murder—she’d kill him herself and be done with the whole affair.
Mitch, a murderer? She couldn’t believe it. No matter what the White House was spinning about Kemp Rodgers’ death, Mitch wouldn’t kill his friend.
Then, again, she’d been Mitch’s friend once…
Finally, she turned, bracing herself for whatever disguise might greet her, but found none. Brave.
As usual.
She took in his long brown hair pulled back in a low ponytail, his dark eyes and ripped jeans, and shook her head. “You’re insane for coming here.”
He shrugged. “It’s a private range. Not like I walked into Quantico.”
It wasn’t enough that he’d almost destroyed her career when he’d first started working The Lion case, now he wanted to have a second go at it. He was a fugitive wanted for murder and she was an FBI agent. She should arrest him.
Yet, she stood waiting for him to say something that would make a damned difference. I’m sorry? I didn’t do it? Anything that would erase the idea that he could have murdered his friend.
She set her rifle on the table behind her, slid the bolt open. Not loaded. She knew it wasn’t, but she checked anyway. Always.
Mitch shuffled behind her.
Too bad. He could wait like she’d waited for him all these months.
Her canvas carry case sat on the bench seat. Like many people, she preferred canvas over hard plastic because the softer material didn’t make the rifle sweat. She dug through the case for her lens covers, popped them on, set the rifle into the case—bolt upward—and zipped it.
She’d clean the rifle later. For her, keeping a weapon in top working order meant cleaning it after every use. Even if only one shot had been fired, her weapons got cleaned. Every time.
She sensed Mitch moving closer, stirring the air around her, upsetting the energy, letting her know he was near. He had that way about him. Sometimes good, sometimes not.
“I need your help.”
Of course he did. Should have known. Radio silence for eleven months and now he wanted her help. “I should shoot you and dump your body in the Reflecting Pool.”
“Yeah, you should.”
She spun and—crack!—smacked him, sending his head sideways and making her hand sting. She’d never physically attacked anyone before and she couldn’t say it felt right or just, but unleashing it felt good. To let him know he’d hurt her. “We were friends. I helped you and you disregarded me.”
“Disregarded you?” Mitch slid a hand over his cheek. “I’ve stayed away and I’m sorry. But what, Caroline? You want to do lunch or hit the shooting range with me? A guy wanted for assaulting your boss and now a federal fugitive?” Gently, he knocked on her head. “Think about it. I was protecting you.”
She didn’t need his protection. “I’m mad at you.”
“Atta girl.”
God, he was annoying. “You had a good reason to take a swing at Donaldson when he threatened you during The Lion case, but honest to God, Mitch, I think he should have swung back and ended it right there instead of trying to throw you in jail. But you should have manned up and never run from the charges, so whatever this is, I can’t help you.”
“Tommy Nusco.”
“You murdered him, too?”
Surprisingly, he blanched. “I didn’t kill anyone. I need to know what went down with Tommy.”
Oh, please. He really had lost his mind if he thought she’d touch that subject. That involved ATF and the State of New Mexico and she wasn’t about to step into that snake pit. “You better worry about what went down with Kemp Rodgers and why the White House is after you. Turn yourself in, Mitch.”
“Kemp told me the White House is buzzing about Executive Privilege being invoked on Tommy’s case. A few hours later, he’s dead. Put two and two together, Caroline. There’s a cover-up in the works and what happened to Tommy is at the heart of it.”
She faced him, still hating that he stood a good six inches taller and managed to make her feel small. She folded her arms and stepped forward, got right into his space. “No.”
“Whatever they’re concocting about Tommy is bullshit.”
“I don’t know that.”
“Yeah, you do. When we all worked together, we hung out. You knew him.”
“Not that well.”
He rolled his eyes in that typical I’m-Mitch-Monroe-and-I’m-bored way of his. “He was not dirty. Whatever he was doing, the government is letting a dead agent take the heat. Why not? He’s dead anyway. Doesn’t matter that he was a decorated officer. The government obviouslyneeds to clean up a mess and—” he inched closer, tilted his head and stared right into her eyes “—I know all about how the government cleans up a mess.”
Back away. She should, but that would play into what he wanted. He wanted to control this conversation. His looming presence used to be enough that she’d give him that control.
Not this time.
She tilted her head the opposite direction, eased out a half-smile. “Mitch?”
“Yes?”
“Screw you.”
She turned her back to him and scooped up her rifle case. Right now, she needed to walk away and not let him talk her into something that would wreck her career.
f7358-goddess artoflovebannartofloveThe Art of Love and Murder by Brenda Whiteside ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BLURB:  Lacy Dahl never questioned her past until the deaths of her adoptive parents and her husband. A husband who wasn’t what he seemed. Her research uncovers secrets about the mother she never knew; secrets that dispute the identity of her father and threaten her life. Sheriff Chance Meadowlark is still haunted by the murder of his wife and the revenge he unleashed in the name of justice. When he meets Lacy he is determined not to become involved, but their pasts may make that impossible. As they move closer to the truth, saving Lacy may be his only salvation. Lacy begins to think the present is more important than her past…until Chance’s connection to her mother and a murder spin her deeper into danger and further from love. Will the truth destroy Lacy and Chance or will it be the answer that frees them? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Excerpt : Lacy quickened her pace. The footsteps behind her did the same. As fast as her feet touched the bricks, her heart beat twice that speed. If only she could clear the narrow alley, step onto the lit sidewalk…  Like a magnet, the street light pulled her forward, and she lunged out of the darkness. Her hand slammed to her chest. After a hard intake of breath and a fast exhale, she cast a furtive glance over her shoulder. With the strap of her purse in a tight fist against her breast, she whirled around to cover the last block at a trot. She didn’t see him until too late. As if she’d hit a cement wall, she careened off balance, but his hands grabbed her shoulders keeping her upright. She gasped and reared back and out of his arms. Her fisted purse became a weapon as she hurled a defensive blow to his chest. Her knee came up, landing a jab to his thigh. “Ehhh,” she cried out from the pain of contact. “Lady, I’m not going to hurt you.” He held his ground and loomed over her, his hands at his chest fending off the swing of her fist. Her vision filled with the imposing figure, and a chill shivered her body. Run screamed in her head. This time the swing of her purse missed her target when she turned to escape. His hand caught her arm and pulled her close. “Help, help me!” Her voice came high and hysterical. “I am trying to help.” Both hands gripped her shoulders now, and her feet came partly off the ground, forcing her to look into his face. “What’s wrong? Are you in trouble?” Her head swung side to side, but the empty street and sidewalks could have been a ghost town. In the distance, a jazzy tune drifted through the air with voices too far away to help. She gulped. He waited. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Review
Lacy Dahl is just trying to find out about the art that she inherited. Never in her wildest dreams did she realize there was a secret buried so deep that it would put her in danger. When she meets Sheriff Chance Meadowlark it was because she thought someone was following, however she had no idea who he was.
Chance isn’t looking for a relationship, he is still carrying his own weight over the death of his wife years ago. When he meets Lacy though he almost wishes for more. When he realizes Lacy is in danger, everything changes. Mixed signals, heated passion, and uncovering deception from years ago are what makes for a fabulous read.
I liked this story a lot. Lacy is upbeat but trying to figure out the history of the sketches she has. Chance is a man who is attracted to Lacy but doesn’t want to be hurt again. The chemistry between the two is sizzling, another great read from Brenda Whiteside.
BLURB:
Ela Danforth seeks sanctuary in the small town of Rockypoint, New Hampshire, where she believes her days will return to normal, until a mysterious stalker threatens her refuge, just as a charming lawyer, Nash McCain, enters her life.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

 Ela whirled toward him. “How will I repay the people who helped me?”

Nah took her hands in his. “Two words—thank you.”

She opened her mouth to protest.

“Repeat after me. Thank you.”

“Thank you?”

“Better. And I’ve one more idea about how to show your gratitude.”

“Do I have to parrot you again?”

“You should.” He lowered his mouth to her lips and caught the warm gasp of her breath. He pulled her against his chest. The zipper pull on her fleece pressed against his shirt through his open jacket. Her lips were as sweet as the honey in his coffee, and tucked against him, she felt small and fragile. He loosened his hold and cupped her chin in his hand. Her gaze locked onto his. “Why are you so good to me?” she asked.

“If you don’t know, I must not have done a good job of kissing you.”

“I’ll vouch for your abilities.” A teasing light sparkled in her eyes.

“To make sure you understood one of my reasons for helping you, we better try again.” He brushed his lips across her cheek and nibbled at her chin.

She laid a restraining hand on his chest and stepped away from him. “How you or I kiss is one thing we don’t have to worry about. We should concentrate on my sister and the rest of the house.”

 Review

As a series of incidents happen to Ela Danforth and her sister, Ela knows someone is after her. Having been deceived by those she loved, Ela doesn’t trust anyone, but when she meets lawyer Nash McCain she finds she is conflicted by the man. When it is evident Ela is in danger, she finds herself putting her trust in Nash and hoping that she wont get burned again.

Suspenseful until the very end. I felt for Ela, she is trying her best to keep her chin up but has no one to really turn to. Ela’s sister is bright but flighty and a bit of a dreamer. I liked Nash a lot, he was patient with Ela and I think from the very beginning knew she needed that. Excellent read.

Don't Blackmail the Vampire (Sons of Kane, #2)Don’t Blackmail the Vampire by Tiffany Allee

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Rachel Davis has a plan, not a very well defined one, but she wants her sister to break up with her jerk of a fiance. Of course nothing goes as Rachel plans, especially when she sees Charles Wright sucking a woman’s next fangs and all.

Charles is planning to trap the same man for threatening his brother’s wife. With Rachel thrown in the mix he may have a better chance, but Rachel is throwing Charles for a loop. She doesn’t react to his vampiric talents and his attraction to Rachel is growing with every moment he spends with her.

Humorous paranormal story that will thrill readers. Loved that Rachel was quirky and that Charles was off his game a bit with Rachel. I will definitely go back and read the first book by this talented author. Look forward to reading more in the future.

Secondhand Romance (Brothers of Audubon Springs, #2)Secondhand Romance by RoseAnn DeFranco

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Tony Iuliano doesn’t know what to make of Annie O’Malley. The woman confuses him like no other. Annie owns a secondhand book store but Tony can’t grasp her willingness to absorb herself into a novel or unravels a mystery about the book that uncovers letters between long lost lovers.

Annie cannot deny that she is attracted to Tony, but once he speaks she has second thoughts. As the town gets involved in their unromance, everyone seems to notice there is something special there, except Annie and Tony. It isn’t that the signs are not there, it is a matter of them understanding where they stand with one another.

I loved this story. I thought Annie was adventuress and her take on untangling a mystery is filled with humor and the possibility of a love that was lost. I thought this story was enchanting.

Community Service by Dakota Madison Review Tour

11 Sunday May 2014

Posted by ehmusings in 4 stars, Contemporary Romance, Review Tour

communitybannercommunitysoverrBook BLURB:
COMMUNITY SERVICE is a 2014 RONÉ AWARDS Nominee (New Adult Category).
As Maggie Mitchell enters her final semester of college, the last thing she wants is a guy in her life, let alone two of them.

Her new lab partner, Sawyer Reed, is still the overconfident and sexy jock that made fun of her in high school. The only thing that has changed is that he now uses a wheelchair, the result of a skiing accident.

Jude Marino is a hot actor who all the girls want and would do anything to get. He works at a local theater where Maggie has been assigned to complete community services hours after rear-ending a police car.

Both Sawyer and Jude want Maggie but only one of them will be able to capture her heart.

Excerpt:

As I entered the lab, I was immediately struck by the state-of-the-art technology. I knew Dr. Weaver was the recipient of a number of very large grants but this lab was beyond anything I could have imagined. I could feel my body start to shake with nervous anticipation.

“Looking for a lab partner?” I heard a voice say from behind. The voice sounded familiar but I couldn’t quite place it.

When I turned around, I was surprised to see Sawyer Reed staring at me. I hadn’t seen him since high school. He was a year older than me but I still knew who he was. Everyone in school knew Sawyer Reed. He was a popular jock who all the kids adored. He still had the same boyish good looks that I remembered so well. And the same sexy little grin that could light up any room. And the same killer green eyes that would drive girls wild. The only thing that was different, and it was really different, was that he was in a wheelchair.

It completely floored me.

I had the biggest crush on Sawyer Reed. I think every girl in our school did. It was hard not to. He could charm the pants off of any girl in a matter of minutes, and usually did, or so I heard. I wasn’t a girl that guys wanted to charm the pants off when I was in high school. I was awkward bordering on geeky. My mom called me a late bloomer.

And I definitely wasn’t on Sawyer’s radar…

Except when we were on the school bus. Every day when he passed by me on his way to the back of the bus, he’d call me Freaky Four Eyes. Not that I didn’t deserve the moniker. For some reason, when I was a teenager, I thought it was a good idea to wear Marilyn Monroe Cat Eye glasses. Not that I looked anything like Marilyn Monroe. In high school, I had frizzy brown hair and the body of a 12-year-old boy. I could have been called the antithesis of Marilyn Monroe, if there was such a thing. But I sure loved those glasses.

I didn’t think there was any way that Sawyer would remember me. I looked a lot different than I did in high school. I found product, so my long brown hair now fell into controlled waves and I wore contacts. I’d also filled out a little. I was still no Marilyn Monroe in the curves department but I had a decent figure.

And why would he remember some younger girl he teased on the bus anyway?

When he said, “I’m Sawyer” and introduced himself, I realized he really didn’t remember me, so I responded with, “I’m Maggie.”

I wasn’t sure if I should put out a hand for him to shake. When I looked down at his hands, I noticed he was wearing half gloves with the open fingers. I assumed it was because he used a manual wheelchair and did a lot of pushing every day. I guessed it got hard on the hands after a while.

He must have noticed me staring at his gloved hands because he said, “I’m a T-10 incomplete, if that means anything to you. I’m paralyzed but I still have some feeling in my lower body. I assume you’ve taken A & P.”

I nodded. I took Anatomy and Physiology my sophomore year. I didn’t know a lot about spinal cord injuries but I had learned a few things about spinal cord function. I knew enough to know that level of injury impacted the lower half of the body, paraplegia, and an incomplete injury meant the spinal cord was not completely damaged and there may still be some functioning.

“How long ago was the accident?” My voice sounded so tentative. I didn’t mean for it to be. I guess I wasn’t sure what was appropriate to ask a person in a wheelchair. I had never actually spoken to anyone in a wheelchair before. That really made me think. Was it because I didn’t have an opportunity to meet anyone in a wheelchair or had I purposefully not made the effort? I had to admit, his wheelchair made me a little uncomfortable. I wasn’t sure if it was because of the wheelchair or because the Sawyer I’d known before was able bodied.

“Four years ago. My freshman year of college. It happened over Christmas Break.”

Sawyer’s upper body looked as good as he did in high school, muscular and toned. I assumed he still worked out although I wasn’t sure exactly how someone in a wheelchair worked out. I guess I never thought about the mechanics of it. A flood of questions filled my mind. I wondered if he drove a car and how he got dressed and made his bed. Then I wondered why I was so curious. I never wondered how anyone else went about their daily functions. It was pretty obvious he had things under control because he looked great, in his nicely fitting white polo shirt and black jeans. I even got the slightest hint of a delicious smelling after shave.

“Maggie,” Sawyer said and I was brought back to the present moment. “Got a lot on your mind?” He gave me that sexy little grin of his and it took my breath away for a moment.

“I—um—” I wasn’t sure what to say. I felt embarrassed even thinking about how he put his pants on in the morning.

“If you have a question, don’t be afraid to ask. I know being in a chair sometimes freaks people out.”

Was it that obvious that I was freaked out? I felt like a real jerk. But I didn’t want to lie to the guy either. That was no way to start a relationship.

A relationship? What was I thinking? There was no way Sawyer Reed would ever want to be in a relationship with Freaky Four Eyes, even if he didn’t remember me from high school. Even though I now passed for normal in the looks department, inside I was still that little nerd who got teased on the bus.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that Sawyer was probably being so nice because we would be spending so much time together as lab partners.

I looked at my watch. Dr. Weaver said she’d meet us at noon and it was just a few minutes before twelve.

“Is everything okay?” Sawyer asked. When I looked at him, I could see a level of compassion in his eyes that I had never seen before. “You seem a little nervous.”

What was there not to be nervous about? I was starting the most sought after internship in the university with a super-hot guy from high school who was now in a wheelchair.

“You know you wouldn’t be here unless you deserved to be,” Sawyer tried to assure me. “You’re obviously smart and I’m sure you’ll kick this internship’s ass.”

That made me smile. He had a way of making me smile that no one else had. There was something about his energy and the way he made me feel in his presence that was just so comforting. “Thanks. I’m sure you’ll kick the internships butt, too.”

“Of course,” he said and smiled. He had to be the most confident person I had ever met in my life. I had no doubt he could talk a car salesman into buying a car.

Review

In highschool Sawyer Reed was the boy everyone crushed on, including Maggie Mitchell.  However their brief relationship usually ended as quick as it began with Sawyer teasing Maggie on the bus and Maggie wishing she was the type of girl he would look at.

Now in her last semester of college, Maggie is about to be paired with a lab partner and unbeknownst to her it is Sawyer.  Sawyer still maintains his handsome looks but there is one big change, the highschool jock is now in a wheelchair.  Another shock to Maggie is that Sawyer is flirting with her and Maggie isn’t sure what to do about it.

Throw in an accidental accident that has Maggie doing community service and bad boy actor Jude Marino intent on adding Maggie to his pool of women.  Maggie, never one to be receiving so much attention from the opposite sex is torn between two men, which one will claim her heart?

Excellent read, I liked both men but Sawyer won me over.  He is self assured but he is also steadying himself for rejection.  I thought Maggie was a strong woman and really got a kick out of her direct approach with both Sawyer and Jude.   Perfect  weekend read.
