Hunter (Emerson Wolves, #1)Hunter by Kathi S. Barton

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Slone Morris has led a life full of ridicule and isolation after being found attacked by a wolf and survived. Slone has built a protective wall around her house to keep others out, she is part shifter and is aware of the other shifters in the community but that doesn’t mean she wants to let her guard down.

New alpha Hunter Emerson is ready to get started with his new pack, but the conditions of the land and the elusive Slone Morris are leaving Hunter intent on meeting her. He believes she is an older woman, but when he comes face to face with her he is stunned by her beauty and the fact she is his mate. As much as Hunter is determined to claim her, Slone is not sure she wants a mate nor the company of any other person. It is a delicate road, but Hunter will do whatever he can to keep Slone happy and content hoping she will one day love him as much as he loves her.

Fascinating read, Hunter is a bit of a stinker in the beginning but once he realizes that Slone needs time to adjust, he is wonderful. I thought the whole story was entertaining and can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

veileedcoverVEILED TARGET

Book Blurb:

Never take Fate along on a date. The kiss goodnight could be deadly.

Tracking down Veilers—non humans—is only a sideline for Tess Damon. Vengeance for her fiancé’s murder is her reason for living. But with two botched jobs on her record, if she fails to eliminate her next mark, she’s dead. She’s not afraid to die, but not before she gets even. Too bad fate has a really bad sense of humor.

Hugh Langston, a wolfen half shifter, lives to keep both humans and his pack safe. But when rogue humans kidnap his apprentice, his rescue mission is compromised by a hot-as-hell, kick-ass woman who makes him think only one thing: mine.

Tess tries to ignore her feelings, but temptation trips her up. Especially when Hugh figures out he’s her next target and forces her into an inconvenient alliance that tests all the laws against their attraction. Now, with the line between good and evil getting blurrier by the minute, it becomes clear Tess’s only hope of living to see another day—and finding a murderer—lies with the one man she’s supposed to kill.

Excerpt:

She woke to a click, but didn’t move or stir or budge. The bed was sooo comfy and cozy and maybe if she stayed still, whatever had caused the click would go away.

“Tess,” said an endearing masculine voice. “It’s time to wake up.”

Her eyes opened wide at the sound of the deep, rugged announcement. “Go away. I’m not talking to you.”

“I’ve got a couple things for you,” he answered, ignoring her no-talking policy.

Darkness still filled the room and she wondered what time it was. It felt like she’d had a solid eight hours sleep so it couldn’t be too early. In fact, she felt more rested than she had in a long time. She stayed motionless and quiet.

“I’m coming in.” The downlight above her head turned on.

She didn’t care. His actions didn’t mean she had to act.

  1. He’s coming in? She sat up, bringing the covers with her. She told herself he didn’t have x-ray vision, but that didn’t stop the tingles popping up all over her body. She was naked, and Hugh was coming into the room.

He wore jeans that sat low on his hips and a plain white T-shirt that clung to his lethally sexy chest muscles. His hair was mussed, like he’d showered and then ran his fingers through it. His face was clean-shaven. His blue eyes deeper than the waters she’d scuba dived in Australia. God, did he have to look so irresistible this morning?

“Good morning.”

She stayed quiet. Because she was mad about being locked in the room or because he took her breath away, she wasn’t sure.

“This no talking thing could work to my advantage.” He stepped closer.

To her nakedness. Did he know she wasn’t wearing anything underneath the sheets? And oh geez, what did her hair look like? Going to sleep with it wet surely meant she had a rat’s nest thing going on.

When he got to the edge of the bed, she watched him venture a peek toward the bathroom. Her eyes followed his and there in plain view were the blue dress and black lace undergarments on the floor.

She pulled the sheets tighter against her. “What time is it?” Talking might get her mind off her birthday suit.

“She speaks.” His eyes held hers with the same mixture of heat and desire she’d noticed last night. “It’s eleven.”

“Eleven? Holy shit. I never sleep this late.” And note to self: Don’t look into his eyes anymore.

He smiled. “Guess you needed it.”

“More like the lack of window space kept the room dark. You’ve got some nerve, you know that?” She ran a hand through her hair to feel what it looked like. Not too bad.

“Do you blame me?”

Admitting she didn’t would not work in keeping him at bay, so she lied. “Yes. I do.” She frowned for further effect.

He dropped something on the bed. “Well, maybe this will make up for it. Clean clothes. And your phone.”

Relief and forgiveness overcame her. Wait. Her phone? “You went through my purse?” It would’ve been a lot better if he’d plopped her bag on the bed, but he was only acting the same way she would have.

“Again, I don’t think you’re surprised. You’ve got some major arsenal in there. And your driver’s license picture doesn’t do you justice.”

He looked less and less sexy by the minute. “You looked through my wallet? Who the hell do you think—”

“I think I needed to confirm you are who you say you are. Tess Elizabeth Damon.” A grin that would have made her fling the sheets to the side and shout “take me” had she not been so pissed at him for snooping flanked his handsome—no, not handsome!—face.

“I’m a P.I.E. eliminator. What makes you think that license is real? I could be Tess one day and Betty the next.” Tess Damon was her real name, but if anyone looked her up, they’d learn only what P.I.E. wanted them to.

Hugh continued to grin. “You don’t look like a Betty.”

“Screw you.”

“I thought we’d been over that, but I’m willing to revisit it if you—”

“I want you the hell out of this room and away from me.” Her blood boiled. Hugh Langston was goddamn annoying.

Review

Tess Damon has been on a mission since her fiance was murdered. After two botched missions leave Tess teetering on the bring of extinction if she fails again, she knows she has to eliminate the newest threat. As if fate intervened, she is assigned to investigate a wolfen who could possibly be a lead in her fiance’s death.

Leader of Night Runners, Hugh Langston has one of his men missing and he is hoping that the blind date that Trey was supposed to go on is a lead. When he meets Tess, he is intrigued but he is there for another reason than a fun time. He never expected the tenacious Tess to get involved in the Night Runner affairs and once he tells her who he really is, Hugh not Trey he doesn’t realize that he is Tess’s newest target.

Packed full of action, suspense, and pure paranormal fun. Loved Tess, she is like a busy bee and doesn’t listen to instructions worth a crap. Hugh has a way of handling her defiance though and it is a pure treat. Extremely fun read, had me intrigued from the very beginning.

Propping her bare feet on the edge of the ancient desk, Molly Ryan took a well-deserved pull of her beer. Before dropping her head back to ease the tension in her shoulders she closed her aching eyes and sighed heavily. It was nearly two in the afternoon, which meant she’d been locked in the pub’s office for roughly six hours, getting caught up on the weekly invoicing, payroll and upcoming supply orders.

The office had no window to enjoy the lake view, but she knew it was a glorious, sunny summer day. It was well worth the sacrifice of her Sunday off to know that she’d put a major dent in her work week, though. With Noah and Tennyson off on their honeymoon for the next two weeks, they’d left Molly in charge of more than just her normal duties.

Managing a busy pub like the Drunken Duck was enough work, but taking on Noah’s responsibilities as owner added a little more tension to her shoulders. To be fair, it was a challenge she was more than up for. Noah had left his brother, Chris, as her second in command for the duration, giving plenty of help.

She heard the service door open down the hall. Undoubtedly it was Chris to check in with her. He had a normal work week as an architect and helped out in the evenings and weekends as needed. He was likely stopping after seeing her sporty red coupe in the empty parking lot.

“Hey, Mr. Sexy Pants, I’m in the office. Bring me another beer on your way!” She couldn’t help teasing him. He’d spent the previous night fighting off advances from Lexie, his latest crazy chick, as Tenn would call her. At one point Lexie had cornered Chris next to the bar, put a slim hand down the front of his tuxedo pants, and called him Mr. Sexy Pants loud enough for half the bar to hear. Watching Chris turn ten shades of red while attempting to pull the tenacious girl’s hand from his pants had caused Molly to fall off her bar stool in hysterical laughter. Even after landing squarely on her ass and spilling her scotch down the front of her bridesmaid dress, effectively ruining it, she still couldn’t stop laughing.

As the office door opened behind her, she pushed off from the desk. The movement sent the chair whirling around, making the tiny room spin in a quick half turn.

“Hey… Oh.” Well, that wasn’t Chris standing in her doorway. Where Chris was leanly muscled, this guy looked like a hulking linebacker, with heavily muscled arms and a chest broad enough to block the sun. He had a black duffel bag slung over one shoulder, exposing the underside of a thick biceps and a heavy tribal tattoo ending at the elbow.

Intensity pulsed off of him. Light mocha skin, a smoothly shaved head, and steely gray eyes, he exuded a quiet watchfulness that was at odds with his stern demeanor. He had an obvious perpetual scowl set on his face. A face, upon closer inspection, that had a full mouth and broad features and a light scar running across his left cheek, just under the eye.

He watched her watching him, and no one spoke for a moment. Molly belatedly realized she was sitting in front of a ridiculously hot stranger in her pajamas. Not even her cute pajamas. When she’d rolled out of bed after a night of just a little too much scotch and not enough sleep, she hadn’t even considered running into anyone. Her apartment was three blocks away, the pub was closed every Sunday, and most of the town was also recovering from Noah and Tenn’s wedding reception.

Who was this guy, and where had he come from? And could she keep him?

If the vixen in black pajama bottoms with pink skulls was Noah’s new bride, then Cal was in a lot of trouble. It went against his code to covet a fellow soldier’s woman. But he was hard-pressed to take his eyes off the petite beauty with a shock of unruly auburn hair and a full, pouty mouth. She darted her tongue across a lush bottom lip, causing his libido to stand at attention.

It was well past time to stop cataloging every attribute of the woman before him, especially if she was Noah’s. “I’m looking for Noah Harper. Is he around?”

“Noah?” She shook her head, as if clearing it, before going on. “He’s not in, but I’m the manager of the Drunken Duck. Can I help you?”

It was relief, first and foremost, that washed over him. Cal was grateful he’d had a chance to speak with Noah earlier in the week. Molly wasn’t Noah’s wife, but the woman he was here to look after.

Review

After an attack that left her attacker in jail, but still getting harassed Molly Ryan moved to North Carolina working at a pub. When it looks like her threat followed her, her friends close in protecting her and calling in Army Ranger Callum Eversman to protect her.

Callum is looking forward to his two week furlough but he had not expected the woman he was supposed to keep an eye on to awaken every bone in his body. Callum wants Molly, but she is insistent that they will only have a no strings affair, for Molly knows better than everyone to not get attached to a military man. Of course she had never met Callum.

Riveting story that has a suspense angle to it. Molly is a spitfire and Callum is all alpha trying to call the shots. Would read more from this series for sure, some very interesting characters are introduced. Great read.

Their Rigid RulesTheir Rigid Rules by Christina Thompson

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

On the last course to officially graduate from Western Michigan University, Taylor Valentine is anxious to start her new life. With her best friends support, Taylor has a carefully laid plan on how her life will unfold. Of course she never expected to fall for her new Professor, Dr. Stuart Morgan.

Stuart had always heard his fathers theory on love at first sight and he took it with a grain of salt, that is until he met Taylor. It is a tricky situation as she is his student and someone is intent on killing him. With an annoying bodyguard in tow, Stuart has to navigate into capturing the woman who is the key to his future and keeping them both alive in order to build a life together.

Fast paced page turner, Their Rigid Rules is a suspenseful romantic story that has so many layers I hope we get to see books on the other characters. You are mesmerized by Taylor and Stuart, I liked that their relationship isn’t easy, they both bumble a bit while learning more about one another. The supporting characters are a band of characters that you will adore, an excellent read.

Secret Scene

He smiles at me then, and it’s the most brilliant smile I’ve seen on his face yet. He reaches his hand across the table at me, and I release my napkin to take it. “Now that that’s out of the way, tell me your secret.”

“My secret?” I ask in confusion.

“The secret you said you would tell me maybe someday,” he reminds me while stroking his thumb over the back of my hand.

“Oh, that,” I say with immediate understanding. “It’s not all that interesting.”

“It must be if it’s a secret,” he prompts.

“It’s not really a secret. It’s public knowledge, just not something I talk about.”

“Yet, you told Brody about it.”

“He’s my friend… my closest.”

“I’m betting Brody was never as close to you as I was this morning… when I was deep inside your body.”

I pull my hand away and glare at him. “Why do you always try to shock me with your sexual innuendos?”

“Love,” Gavin drawls in that sexy, English accent. “That wasn’t innuendo. That was pure fact… I was deep inside your body this morning, feeling every inch of your sweet pussy surrounding me.”

“Stop it,” I hiss at him across the table.

He leans back in his chair slowly, giving me a calculated smile. Drumming his fingers on the table, he says, “It’s time for you to stop being shy with me, Sweet. I know you inside and out now.”

“You don’t know anything about me,” I counter.

“I know plenty. I know you’re unbelievably sweet, kind, and caring. I know you have an amazing work ethic. I know you’re smart and funny, and you’re fucking sexy as hell. I also know that you’re a risk taker and that you are nothing like I first thought you were. I know you’re private and timid, but when you get angry, you stand up for yourself. I know your body feels amazing wrapped around me, and I know that I want to feel it again… tonight as a matter of fact. I know that I love to hear you scream in pleasure, and I know my cock is aching for you right this very minute. If I thought you’d let me, I’d pull you into the bathroom right now and fuck you standing in one of the stalls, hopefully while someone came in, and we’d have to be very quiet so as not to get caught. And I know… without a doubt, you’d scream anyway, regardless of the danger.”

Heat courses through my body, along with gratification that he does know quite a bit about me already. That means he was looking at far more than just my tits and ass, and he has found appreciation outside of those things that normally a man would notice about a woman.

“Now, tell me your secret,” he commands.

Leashed by a Wolf (Shifters of Hillside, #1)Leashed by a Wolf by Cherie Nicholls

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Mechanic Laney St. Clair is a woman on a mission. Tired of being overlooked by her crush Alpha Heath Masterson, Laney has a bit of a makeover determined to snare his attention. Of course Heath decides to go big brother on her, until Laney catches him off guard and leaves no question to what she wants, him.

Heath and his wolf want Laney as their mate, but taking a human delicate woman like Laney as a mate wont work. He needs a strong mate, one who can weather whatever storm comes her way. Points are not given to Alpha’s for intelligence though, because Laney is no ordinary woman and she can hold her own with any man shifter or not.

First in the Shifters of Hillside series. This was quite fun but the two of them need their heads knocked together. Laney is hurt by Heath’s idiocy and Heath is determined not to hurt Laney. Picking up the rest in the series soon.

Simon (Le Beau Brothers, #2)Simon by V.A. Dold

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Simon Le Beau has been recovering since returning home from his time in the service. As a wolf shifter, his body craves touch and serving time in the service was the right thing to do, it caused after effects that Simon can’t seem to heal. Simon is making progress though with the help of his new sister-in-law, but when her friend Rose arrives he knows he has found his mate, but is he worthy of her?

Rose has her own demons to slay, she senses an immediate connection to Simon but when she believes he rejects her it brings back those feelings that still haunts her. Simon wants to claim his mate and even with his wolf pushing to do so, he knows he has to wait until Rose agrees. It should be a smooth courtship, but someone is out to get Rose and Simon will do everything in his power to protect his mate.

This was a beautifully written story, completely different than the first book Cade. Simon and Rose are both a bit broken, but that is what makes their relationship so special. Once Simon makes up his mind what to do with Rose, he is tender and protective. I look forward to more and you get a bit of a peek at the next book, can’t wait looks to be highly entertaining.
